Metro Group announces stable sales

While Metro Group’s sales in Germany and Western Europe were only slightly below the 2008 level, turnover in Eastern Europe dropped 12.8 percent to Euro 15.8 billion (US-$ 22.9 billion), reflecting unfavorable currency effects and the difficult economic environment. In Asia and Africa, Metro recorded a plus of 4.7 percent, mainly due to positive currency effects resulting in sales of Euro 2.3 billion (US-$ 3.3 billion). In local currency, the increase was 0.5 percent.

Metro’s Media Markt and Saturn technical stores increased their market share in Europe with sales of Euro 19.7 billion (US-$ 28.6 billion), a plus of 3.7 percent or 5.5 percent in local currency. At the end of 2009, the store network of Media Markt and Saturn comprized 818 stores in 16 countries, there off 375 in Germany, 322 in Western and 121 in Eastern Europe.

Media Markt/Saturn opened 50 new technical stores in 2009, including eight stores each in Germany and Turkey, 7 in Italy, 6 in Russia, 4 in Spain and 3 each in Belgium, France and Poland. At the end of 2009, the store network of Media Markt and Saturn comprized 818 stores in 16 countries, there off 375 in Germany, 322 in Western and 121 in Eastern Europe.
