Fuji Xerox to integrate its R&D Functions at New R&D Site in Yokohama

Iwatsuki Center focuses on the development of printers and multifunction devices for large-format drawings. This development function will be integrated to Fuji Xerox R&D Square in order to strengthen cross-divisional relationships throughout Fuji Xerox. The integration will enable a faster response to market needs by shortening product development lead time, streamlining R&D costs and reinforcing relationship between customers and the company’s R&D divisions. Iwatsuki Center’s prototype and manufacturing technologies will be transferred to Ebina Center (Ebina-shi, Kanagawa). Approximately 750 staff members will be transferred to either one of the sites.

Iwatsuki Center was established in 1961, as Iwatsuki Photo Optical Works Co., Ltd., an affiliate of Fuji Photo Optical Co., Ltd.Note 1 Following the establishment of Fuji Xerox in Feb 1962, Iwatsuki Photo Optical Works commenced production of the first Japan-produced plain paper copier, the Xerox 914, and was transferred to Fuji Xerox in 1971. As a major Fuji Xerox plant in Japan, it developed and produced office equipment including digital multifunction devices, digital color multifunction devices, and color laser printers. Since 2000, after its production function was transferred to Ebina Center and Suzuka Fuji Xerox (Suzuka-shi, Mie; currently Fuji Xerox Manufacturing Suzuka Center), Iwatsuki Center has played the role of development site for printers and multifunction devices for large-format drawings.

Following the opening of Fuji Xerox R&D Square, Fuji Xerox plans to integrate the core of its R&D facilities within the new Square and Ebina Center. Ebina Center will also continue to operate as a major site to develop manufacturing technologies.
