UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) International Photographic Competition on the Environment 2004-2005

Exhibition of Award-Winning Photographs

Canon Inc. and UNEP are pleased to hold the "UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) International Photographic Competition on the Environment 2004-2005" Exhibition of Award-Winning Photographs at photokina from September 26 (Tuesday) to October 1 (Sunday). Canon Inc., which proactively tackles environmental conservation on a global level based on its philosophy of kyosei – living and working together for the common good – has sponsored this competition, organized by UNEP, since its inception in 1991.

This fourth competition invited entries from people of all nationalities and ages, and was open to both amateur and professional photographers. Under the theme "Focus on Your World," it attracted 32,299 entries from 169 countries and regions around the world. A panel of internationally renowned photographers judged the entries. The exhibition of award-winning entries features 137 outstanding works selected from among all the entries submitted.

Photographs tell the full story of our stewardship of the planet, depicting humankind’s relationship with the environment and the challenges that the natural world faces. These messages can serve as a wake-up call; the environmental, cultural and spiritual riches that we so often take for granted are on the brink of disappearing right in front of our eyes.

This photographic competition should provide inspiration for years to come for people around the globe to cherish our planet’s irreplaceable diversity, not just in pictures, but also in the lives of each one of us.

These works were also exhibited at the United Nations Pavilion of the 2005 World Exposition, Aichi, Japan, which was held last year. All the works exhibited are A3 size or larger and were printed with Canon printers (PIXMA and ImagePROGRAF). This exhibition of winning works will be the first held in the European region.
